This spring the California Legislature will decide whether to begin construction on the nation's first 220-mph high-speed rail line.

The Legislature must include high-speed rail construction funds in its FY2013 budget (which begins July 1, 2012) in order to break ground this fall and take advantage of the federal high speed rail funds.

California High Speed Rail has become a pivotal project regarding the future of national passenger rail policy. Its success will make it easier to gain support for other passenger rail projects across the country, ranging from local streetcars to high-speed rail projects. Its failure will be a setback for everyone.

It is critical California residents who support high-speed rail, or any other passenger rail project, let their legislators know.

Californians, please share this link and contact your legislators:

railLA supports lawsuits that force LA to improve sidewalks

Public transportation is the great equalizer - if rail lines reach your area you can travel along those lines throughout the city regardless of race, income, or disability. However, if you are in a wheelchair and can't travel down a sidewalk to reach the bus or take the train because of the condition of the sidewalks or obstacles in your path then you are effectively cut off. Improving sidewalks is part of improving communities and access to public transportation and the high-speed rail lines of the future in California.

Part of advocating for effective and efficient public transportation systems is advocating for those with disabilities to be empowered to move about the city. railLA supports those who are filing civil-rights lawsuits against the city to focus attention on these issues, and we look forward to seeing our communities change as a result of this legal action.

railLA has set the event date for Dapper Day on the Subway - our first annual event where we take to the rails in our finest attire to celebrate the history, culture, and future of Los Angeles and its rail lines.

Imagine stepping off a train to find a string quartet playing in the middle of a train platform, a musical performed on a subway car, a special tour of a historic Frank Lloyd Wright house, or an impromptu art exhibit! If you would like to offer an event, performance, or promotional offer to those who ‘dress dapper’ on April 29th, please let us know by visiting our website and contacting our events team!

railLA is pleased to announce that we are planning an event in April called Dapper Day on the Subway. It's all about dressing up in fashionable clothes and riding the rails to interesting places around the city. Those who ‘dress dapper’ will be invited to attend art shows, tours, and free events along the rail lines in LA. All that is required is a ticket to ride the rails and you - dressed up in your dapper attire of choice. Part performance art, part cultural experiment, Dapper Day is about exploring the lost luxury and convenience of rail travel, embracing rail as a gateway to culture, and having a lot of fun while doing it!

railLA is hosting our first Dapper Day on the Subway this year on Sunday, April 29, 2012. We hope to see you there!

the votes are in: battle carmeggedon was a victory for transit. thousands of drivers saw our rally banner posted over a car-free 10, and got a preview of what LA will look like with high speed rail, subways, and bus rapid transit. want moving through LA to always be as easy as was during the carpocalypse? then join railLA and help make travelling through the city more pleasant.

have pics of the banner? post them to twitter and tag them #LAbeyondCars. we'll post them on our page and our favorite will be our splash page. thanks!</description>

gensler's entry in SCI_Arc's A New Infrastructure competition was an organizer's selection and a proposal to solve los angeles' transit problems through more servers instead of more highway lanes or rail lines. railLA digital applications chair alex webb worked on the entry, and continues to explore similar ideas with railLA's ride finder app. the ride finder is currently beta testing with iPhone users, if you'd like to try it out, send us an email.

napoli-afragola high speed rail station
by zaha hadid architects

The proposal for the New High Speed Station Napoli Afragola is a bridge extending across the tracks. The key challenge of the architectural scheme is to create a well organized transport interchange that can simultaneously serve as a new landmark to announce the approach to Naples – thus a new gateway to the city. The concept of the bridge emerges from the idea of enlarging the overhead concourse, required to access the various platforms, to such a degree that it can become the main passenger concourse itself.

Providing an urbanized public link across the tracks, the task is to give expression to the imposition of a new through-station that can also act as the nucleus of a new proposed business park linking the various surrounding towns. The bridge concept further allows two strips of extended park-land to move openly through the site alongside the tracks opening and connecting the site to the surrounding landscape and business park. The architectural language proposed, geared towards the articulation of movement, is pursued further within the interior of the building, where the trajectory of the travelers determines the geometry of the space.
