At 3:30 we all gathered in the old ticketing lobby at Union Station which is off limits to the general public for a group photo. The room is absolutely gorgeous!

The next stop on the tour was Angels Flight where we were delighted by live performances from Los Angeles del Tango! After a quick ride up Bunker Hill we were treated to a presentation by John H. Welborne from Angels Flight Historic Railway Foundation.

The tour came to an end in Chinatown, where we gathered for food and fun shopping. As the sun set over Los Angeles the paper lanterns illuminated and the neon glowed bright.

Although the tour had come to an end, the dapper festivities continued at Maxwell DeMille's Cicada Club in downtown Los Angeles. It was a glorious end to a fabulous day celebrating trains and the history of the city of Los Angeles!

DAPPER DAY ON THE SUBWAY is this Sunday, April 29th. To help educate the dapper community how to dress up and ride the rails we created this funny silent film!

Dapper Dan comes from an era where rail was the dominant way to navigate Los Angeles. Watch what happens when he encounters our modern day rail system! If Dan can figure out how to use Metro Rail, so can you!

Dapper Dan is played by Dickie Hearts, a deaf actor who is naturally very expressive! Since Dickie can't hear, the director, Jeremy Stutes, communicated back and forth with Dickie on set via an iPhone app called Big Words.

Please share this video with your friends to support Dickie and DAPPER DAY ON THE SUBWAY!

the votes are in: battle carmeggedon was a victory for transit. thousands of drivers saw our rally banner posted over a car-free 10, and got a preview of what LA will look like with high speed rail, subways, and bus rapid transit. want moving through LA to always be as easy as was during the carpocalypse? then join railLA and help make travelling through the city more pleasant.

have pics of the banner? post them to twitter and tag them #LAbeyondCars. we'll post them on our page and our favorite will be our splash page. thanks!

MEGA USC, a student group from the University of Southern California, took on a 24-hour design challenge and created video games for railLA. Only one team from the group could be crowned a winner and the crown for this challenge went to team Impending Games. Impending Games creatively interpreted high speed rail and Los Angeles without traffic through their game, 8:59 AM.

Although there was only one cash-prize winner, all of the other teams did an amazing job. 8:59 AM and the other video games will be posted on our website in April.

This spring the California Legislature will decide whether to begin construction on the nation's first 220-mph high-speed rail line.

The Legislature must include high-speed rail construction funds in its FY2013 budget (which begins July 1, 2012) in order to break ground this fall and take advantage of the federal high speed rail funds.

California High Speed Rail has become a pivotal project regarding the future of national passenger rail policy. Its success will make it easier to gain support for other passenger rail projects across the country, ranging from local streetcars to high-speed rail projects. Its failure will be a setback for everyone.

It is critical California residents who support high-speed rail, or any other passenger rail project, let their legislators know.

Californians, please share this link and contact your legislators:

railLA supports lawsuits that force LA to improve sidewalks

Public transportation is the great equalizer - if rail lines reach your area you can travel along those lines throughout the city regardless of race, income, or disability. However, if you are in a wheelchair and can't travel down a sidewalk to reach the bus or take the train because of the condition of the sidewalks or obstacles in your path then you are effectively cut off. Improving sidewalks is part of improving communities and access to public transportation and the high-speed rail lines of the future in California.

Part of advocating for effective and efficient public transportation systems is advocating for those with disabilities to be empowered to move about the city. railLA supports those who are filing civil-rights lawsuits against the city to focus attention on these issues, and we look forward to seeing our communities change as a result of this legal action.

Define Dapper: neat, trim; stylishly dressed, neatly dressed, spiffy

DAPPER DAY ON THE SUBWAY is a whistle-stop tour of historic Los Angeles. We will dress up in dapper clothes and enjoy a bygone era of sophisticated leisure on the MetroRail lines. We'll stop at historic locations along the way. All that is required is a ticket to ride the rails and you - dressed up in your dapper attire of choice. Part performance art, part cultural experiment, DAPPER DAY ON THE SUBWAY is about dressing up, exploring the lost luxury and convenience of rail travel, embracing rail as a gateway to culture, and having a lot of fun while doing it!

railLA is pleased to announce that we are planning an event in April called Dapper Day on the Subway. It's all about dressing up in fashionable clothes and riding the rails to interesting places around the city. Those who ‘dress dapper’ will be invited to attend art shows, tours, and free events along the rail lines in LA. All that is required is a ticket to ride the rails and you - dressed up in your dapper attire of choice. Part performance art, part cultural experiment, Dapper Day is about exploring the lost luxury and convenience of rail travel, embracing rail as a gateway to culture, and having a lot of fun while doing it!

railLA is hosting our first Dapper Day on the Subway this year on Sunday, April 29, 2012. We hope to see you there!
